Shout-out to Amanda who posted the answer to my question about the colorization of fashion plates over at the facebook page. Here’s a link to and 1807 edition of La Belle Assemblee that sums it all up!
Your blog is absolutely amazing. Ever since I followed you, I have been wondering, where do you get all of these plates? Do you buy them or find them on the internet? But in all seriousness, it's a fantastic blog. And the bonnets you make are amazing.
Another great souce is Google Books! I get a lot of my 19th Century fashion plates from there- it is a marvelous resource! They take some work to get and they aren’t always the best quality, but many, many publications have been digitalized by those good folks, which is SUCH a boon for researchers!
There is a great community on LiveJournal called La Mode Illustree where fashion plates are published from various places and many of the ones that you see here have come from there.
I’ve also been lucky enough to have a few people send me images that they have found, including the wonderful Kathy who posts at La Mode Illustree and the lovely Julia, a reader from England who collects fashion plates.
I actually don’t own ANY of the plates- they just digital images that have come from all corners of the internet and I wanted a place to share them! Unfortunately I’ve been collecting the images for years, and only recently have I started saving their sources, so there are probably many other sites that I can’t remember or think of at the moment!
